The owners of the Cardinal Residence wanted a modern, efficient, sustainable and resilient home to replace their aging, inefficient cottage in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. The design of the home was greatly influenced by its wooded site, the local flood plain, the orientation of the house to the street.
The living and bedroom spaces of the original cottage were organized around a screened in porch/ breezeway and the owners loved the feeling of always being outside even when they were inside the house. The goal for the project was to recreate that feeling in a new, energy efficient home that could withstand occasional flooding during seasonal nor’easters.
